In the year 2009 Fever Ray released a debut album under the same name. 'Fever Ray' debuted as a self imposed idealistic world created by Karin Dreijer Andersson from The Knife. 'When I Grow Up' was the second single from the 'Fever Ray' album.
Under odd circumstances the music video for 'When I Grow Up' illustrates a bizzare childhood character standing on a diving board, while a pool beneath starts to collect falling leaves. Almost instantly a type of storm whether unleashed from the creature or nature remains to be seen. Fever Ray without a doubt became a lost figure within the details of child and adulthood. What Andersson visually gifts the screen is easily compared to the song itself. Nor music video or audio is lost within production. While 'When I Grow Up' follows along the lines of electronic...it should be said that Fever Ray also established a sort of tribal primeval concoction.
Take for instances the repetitive and sped up heartbeat loop which underlines throughout a few songs on 'Fever Ray'. Something as pure, simple as well as human into each and every track is a risk. However, with Andersson being one half of The Knife, Andersson already pressed through the high dance rival of electronic and upbeat music. So Fever Ray certainly was some kind of stray from the light and into a darker realm.
Fever Ray has stated that 'When I Grow Up' is about transformation involving water. Whether monster, being or something altogether eerie was the initial idea, 'When I Grow Up' grounds a playful attitude towards an unsettling venture. Similar to the imaginations of children who see neither scary or slightly frightening. Some creatures are braced with scales and others with various types of patterns. Which shows in the costume worn by Andersson in the music video.
What is compelling is Andersson knack for storytelling. Sense of adventure, unknown and all around clueless imagination. Anything goes in Fever Ray's world and hopefully 'When I Grow Up' was a mere reveal into a larger picture.
