In 2007, OneRepublic released their debut album, “Dreaming Out Loud”. Its lead single, "Apologize", remixed by Timbaland,a huge international success, reached number one in sixteen countries and subsequently earned them a Grammy Award nomination. The second single, "Stop and Stare", mirrored its predecessor's success. The album was later certified Platinum by the RIAA or the Recording Industry Association of America. The band's second album, “Waking Up”, produced the successful singles, "All the Right Moves", "Secrets", "Marchin’ On", and "Good Life", with Good Life reaching the top ten of the US Billboard Hot 100.
OneRepublic's third album, Native released on 2013, became the first top ten album on the Billboard 200, and the highest charting album, charting at number four. The lead single, "If I Lose Myself", charted within the top ten in several countries, while the album's third single, "Counting Stars", became the band's most successful single in recent years, obtaining top five placements in Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, the U.S. and the UK. This marks their highest charting single in the United Kingdom. It has also peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, matching their highest peak of "Apologize" in the year 2007.
The single, "If I Lose Myself" composed by Alessandro Rodolfo Lindblad Benjamin Joseph Levin kind of incorporates themes of living life to the fullest, adventure, discovery, and friendship.
At first, I thought this song was a “party all night song" or giving your best to the one you love because there is just something in the melody and the lyrics. If taken this song entirely, the lyrics would suggest that the person talking was taking risks for love or for friendship. “Losing yourself” is a phrase with so much meaning to it and listeners, including me kind of thought it was just being selfless and stuffbut I was shocked at the truth.
In an interview with MTV news, lead singer/songwriter Ryan Tedder had this to offer:
"Even though it sounds like this euphoric, 'let's go crazy tonight' song, it's a bit morbid; it's about going down in an airplane.
Waking up on an airplane and finding out you're going down, having that moment of sheer panic, looking out the window, seeing your life pass before you, [but] looking over to your right and seeing the person you love sitting next to you, and realizing 'It could be worse ... the next 90 seconds are going to be pretty thrilling, and this person is with me, so I'm okay."
Listen to this song and find out for yourself and realize there is a lot to song more than meets the ear.
