Pet Shop Boys bring a little bit of happiness

Remember classics like “West End Girls”, “It’s a Sin” and “Go West”? Well, forget all those, because the Pet Shop Boys have managed to squeeze in a little bit of country in their new single, “Happiness”. It’s just a hint of the genre that comes through in the vocals,  but it’s noticeable and interesting.

“Happiness”, to me, feels like it’s quite the opposite of their last, biographical, single “The Pop Kids”. The song is missing verses and the only singing it contains are the hooks. It’s contemporary, but retro. Altogether, this feels more like an underground club track than a pop song.

Therefore, it showcases the duality that make up The Pet Shop Boys’ strong side.  It’s no surprise there, that they’ve chosen this song to be the opening song for their new, forthcoming, album “Super”.

It’s amazing how this duo has managed to stay relevant in today’s music scene. They have built up a massive, loyal, following over the years and have proven to be real masters of all kinds of electronic pop/dance music. They are true icons.

The rest of the world always does the predictable with icons: Study them! So, the University of Edinburgh actually put the focus on the group for a full two day conference, surrounding the 30 year anniversary of their debut album release. You know you made it when the academic world is also starting to take notice.

For many, the Pet Shop Boys may have actually gone unnoticed for several years. Most of their big hits date back from the 80s, but the duo has written many songs for others and have therefore always been part of mainstream success through others. What else could you expect from the pop kids?

Fast forward to today though, their new album “Super” is currently available for pre-order and gets accompanied by a few tour dates.
