What a wonderful day it is if you write a short essay about Andrew Liles! Life is beautiful and each moment is perfect when you can sit back, relax and write about the true artist. Actually, it’s taken me pretty much time to get really deep into Liles' art – once and for ever. I’ve been peering at and sniffing his art for about a year understanding this was it, but postponing something worthy for a “special moment.” But it was inevitable. My Special Someone's been waiting for the moment I finally discover the whole glory and uniqueness of Andrew Liles' soundscapes. It is her who’s introduced me to his music knowing it would become one of my favorite ones. And she was so right: our sect desire could not avoid falling in love with these sounds which are so true and meaningful.
For those who do not know: Andrew Liles is an English musician, composer, producer and “sometime member of Nurse With Wound and Current 93”. He’s got enormous quantity of releases being made since the mid-80s. Andrew’s been collaborating with many notable artists among which are: Steven Stapleton, Ernesto Tomasini, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Darren Tate, Vidna Obmana, David Tibet, Bass Communion and many, many others. Andrew Liles is a living cult. It's pretty cool to be a living cult, isn't it?
But collaborations and statuses do not mean anything. The whole thing is about music. So what is it, Andrew Liles' music? It’s a journey into the known; known but deformed and rearranged. It’s like you think your room is familiar and you know every corner and every single thing in it, but suddenly you get lost in the visions unknown. It’s like a dream when you do know this is the exact place but it looks different. The same thing is about Andrew Liles' music. It’s the kind of journey showing you things can be different. No! Things are different. And senses are much deeper. His electronic sounds create Lovecraft’s gates in your attic which can lead you to the other side of a mirror. And things familiar and ordinary will be shown from the different angles; you will find drama, horror and a special humor in common things. And this is Magic. This is the real ritual of living and music for love cults.
