Why So Many Duets?

Album reviewed by:

Two brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence were always surrounded with music. They parents were professional musicians, they have studied classical music and Debussy is their muse. They are Disclosure and you probably know them because of dozens of hits from their debut Settle. After winning many awards, they have released their second album Caracal. The record is full of duets but it is a bit weaker than the debut.

Singers that are featured are belonging to diverse genres, so there is everything from jazz to pop. In general, Disclosure is just another electro group who is mixing pop music of the 80s with contemporary streams. There is some house flavor but everything is mainly bursting with electro pop numbers that sound pretty similar. A little bit of dub helps with commercial success. These boys were raised on hip hop, techno, house, classic, jazz and those influences can only somewhat be experienced through their music. It is almost as If they wanted to separate themselves from their knowledge and create something totally different.

The Weeknd, Gregory Parker, Lorde, Kwabs, Sam Smith are all in the house. Songs that brothers are singing sound more convincing so maybe they didn’t need as much famous names (surely, they needed them for popularity of the record). Hence, it is a smart move for the production but the album would sound much better If they stick to their own story.
