God Colony are only just beginning their journey into the underworld of dark-edged beats and mutated electronics. I attempt to put faces to names and explore their hidden symmetry for Kurrent Music.
Lurking like freshwater predators beneath the surface of the bellowing masses are two-piece production force calling themselves God Colony. With only two releases to their name so far they have only given us a taste of what is to come.
There isn’t much out there on the ‘net concerning these two London-based producers but that is surely going to change as they continue to astonish with each new release. Twitter and Soundcloud is pretty much where it’s at currently, slowly leaking track after killer track. There’s little to compare them with. They have attained something so rare these days; an original voice, a different sound, something that makes you try and decode their enigmatic machinery.
With the glitch-heavy Where I Was featuring Stash Marina and the cavernous and industrial swept Steady featuring an astonishing turn from Flohio they have shown themselves to be operating on a different level to the trap, dub and fog of spoken word surrounding them. Both tracks have scorched their path across the musicsphere gaining plaudits and admiring glances aplenty. Designed for home listening and club play alike, both tunes showcase the versatility of God Colony and the depth of their writing.
Friends Tom Gorton and James Rand, who have been making music together since their teenage years, have an intuitive ear for production and vast but paired-back sonic trips. In their short span they have already been championed by Mary Anne Hobbes, have Radio 1 airplay and a guest mix for Toddla T behind them which has seen their slow emergence into the wider public consciousness. I expect 2016 to be the year they surface above the 'noise' and show us what other synthetic delights they have to offer.
If the whispers are true, they are currently working on their debut record with a selection of MC’s from around the world, slated for release sometime in the New Year. Watch to the portentous skies for signs of their imminent arrival, it’s going be huge.
