After delivering Rita Ora onto the scene with “Hot Right Now”, I’ve only seen the name DJ Fresh pop up a few times, for just a few single releases since. I assumed his focus was more on playing the clubs, but just before the closing of this year, DJ Fresh has made his mark with a very fresh track in a battle against Diplo. In a star studded collaboration, they’ve delivered the track, “Bang Bang”, with the help of R City, Selah Sue and, none other than golden boy, Craig David. For me, it was the mention of Selah’s name that made me want to hear this track. Selah Sue sounded like the odd one out to me, when I heard the names put together, but her raw vocals turned out to be remarkably fitting on this catchy dance track. It gives it an extra dimension.
The song starts out slow, but the emergency sirens in the background already give away that something else is coming. The energy follows as soon as the beat starts and the song really takes off. The various styles that every artist brings to the table, appear to be the secret ingredient that makes this track stand out so much. There’s a little bit of everything in the track; soul and drum n bass, even some r&b just by the pure addition of Craig's silky smooth vocals. There’s not ever a dull moment.
For Diplo, it's his second collaboration to see a release this month. His remix of MØ's “Final Song" with Jauz was released just a few days before "Bang Bang". In 2017, Diplo seems set to release even more collaborations with the likes of Nikki Minaj, Ariana Grande and Tinashe. Diplo also is booked to play many festivals and major parties, so there's definitely no final song in the works for him.
In the meantime, I'm pretty sure "Bang Bang" will climb the charts as it's also a welcomed varation to all the ballads and Christmas songs that are usually out at this time of year.
