Ace of Base take you to the tropics

t’s not often I get to write about two Swedish acts in one week. Earlier, I wrote about ABBA returning to the stage for a one off private affair. This time, I’m writing about another party of 4, also making a very unexpected return.

Ace Of Base made their entrance onto the pop scene early 90s. They were on the wave of europop and in the lead of mixing it with a reggae sound. They were also at the start of the successful time ahead for producer Denniz Pop, who went on to work with Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, after Ace of Base had put the focus of the music world back on Sweden.

Their fame took over the world, which, after two or three years, abruptly seemed to come to an end.

Just before, it was reported that blond singer, Linn, had an unexpected visitor. An armed and obsessed fan surprised her one day and - in light of what recently happened to The Voice singer Christina Grimmie - rightfully, scared her so badly to want to get away from the spotlight and fame. This ended Ace Of Base as we knew it. According to reports, anyway.

What really ended their fame is actually pretty unclear. It’s clear Linn left, at some point, but she started a solo career, so either she came to terms with her fear or she simply had another ambition that drove her.

The band still tried it in different formats after, even adding two completely different women to the group. Like many bands, they all also went off to do other things. Some continued on a musical path, some others started investing in tech startup companies. But whenever a new opportunity arrived to try it with Ace of Base again, they seemed to have taken it and tried it.

And so, they popped up last week with a new release. Well, new?! It’s a remix of their hit “All That She Wants”, made by Mowlo. This time the summer reggae sounds have been replaced by an even more tropical sound: Tropical house.
