Divine
Native Love
Divas are everything. They turn on the lights and tell us when to love and when to pass out being too drunk of their love. Divas are mommies kissing us goodnight. And we cannot fall asleep because this love just won’t let us do it… Divas are love messiahs and destroyers of all the sins. Divas are everything I say. Step by step they make us believe and feel the rhythm of this Universe. This Universe is Love and we’ve got to feel it – that’s what Divas say. Divas are Magic. They feed us from their hands and we don’t dare to bite those hands. Those are the purest hands ever. They are sinners and saints. They are lovers and whores. They are Goddesses. We want them to love us. They want us to want them. Divas are our eternal archetype – one of the sweetest and most desirable archetypes ever. Divas are all Devilish and Divine.
Yes, Divine! This is a real Diva I’d like to tell you about. Harris Glenn Milstead was a real name of Divine – an actress (yes, actress), singer and drag queen. Divine was born in Baltimore, Maryland. It was John Waters who gave Harris this stage name. Divine was a part of Waters’ acting troupe called “Dreamlanders”. She played female roles in “Roman Candles”, “Eat Your Makeup” and “The Diane Linkletter Story”. Then Divine played in “Mondo Trasho” and “Multiple Maniacs” – Waters’ full length movies. 1972 was year of a big success. It was a year of John Waters’ “Pink Flamingos” – a cult following movie which starred Divine. So if you think you don’t know who Divine is – you are wrong. If you’ve seen Pink Flamingos you do know Divine.
Then there were movies and theatre: Divine performed in a drag collective “The Cockettes” and played in “Trouble Woman” and some more films by John Waters. Also Divine made her contribution as a disco singer performing songs written by Bobby Orlando at the most.
All this can be found on the web of course. All this is not a secret. Divine is an icon, Divine is beauty and lots of fun. Divine is often referred to as a cult counterculture artist. Well, counterculture is a pretty poor term and cliché for such a big artist, you know.
There are no Divas like Divine. Of course all of them are one of a kind. But Divine is the onest of a kindest. Divine’s world is too unique to be real and too real to believe it. This world is divine because of Divine. The world of trashy disco tracks and touching images in a true cult cinema. You can laugh and cry at the same time because of Divine. You can fall in love and lose yourself. And then you will suddenly find yourself smoking cigarettes with a makeup on your face somewhere in the middle of a dirty street in the middle of nowhere. Divine is not just a drag queen with style and a good sense of humor. Divine is Diva giving you joy and pleasure just because she can. You know, they do it because they have to. No reasons work. They do it because they can. The kiss you goodnight and good morning because love’s got to be spread. They sin in your name. The laugh and you feel them. Divine is a prayer written on a cigarette filter with a pink lipstick. And this is one of the purest things in this world. Their way of having fun scare you and makes you beg for more. Their dresses are trashy and sophisticated. And when Divine is on a screen you forget all the crap happening in this world at this moment. You are happy and grateful because Diva has told you to be that way. They show you the way and the path.
