Crystal Gayle's Cry

Artist reviewed by:

he song “Cry” was originally a runaway hit made famous by Johnny Ray in 1956. Upon hearing his version,  it was nice and lightly entertaining, but Crystal’s version is miles better. Cut in 1986, as a single off her “Straight to the Heart” album was an illustrious effort to remain on the charts as her popularity began to wain. As the music surges throughout the verses, there are two times that Gayle hits a high B-flat on the word cry. The note is so serenely held. It’s just gorgeous. This would prove to be her final number one record to date as other artists came to dominate the radio waves. This doesn’t mean that she is no longer relevant. Her captivating voice is still velvety and smooth and this is striking today. She is still one of the queens of country music of all time.
