I was a fan of Carrie Underwood the moment I first heard her sing on “American Idol.” She has many songs that I thoroughly enjoy and listen to often. With that being said, her hit song “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” is still my favorite song of hers. It was her first country radio hit song.
The song always gives me goose bumps, and makes me feel good, because it reminds me that Jesus is out their watching out for us.
You may not have heard the story about how the song came to be, but it is an interesting story. “Jesus Take the Wheel” was co-written by Brett James, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson.
In an interview with “The Boot” in 2015, Brett James talked about the day the song was written. He said it was Hillary’s house, and that Gordie walked in and said he a title, but he did not know what to do with it. The title was “When Jesus Takes the Wheel.” He said he and Hillary laughed and thought it was kind of a silly title. He said the talked about other song titles, but went back to Gordies title. They then cam up with a girl driving on Christmas Eve with a baby in the car, and “Jesus, Take the Wheel was created.
He also said that when he was dating his wife she almost died in a similar experience, and nearly died. Her car went under an 18-wheeler after spinning around several times. She told him she saw angels come help her, and she walked away from the accident with no injuries.
Another interesting tidbit about the song comes from Lady Antebellum’s, Hillary Scott. Scott said she was first heard the song first and she almost recorded it. I am sure it would have been a hot for her as well, but I am glad Underwood got to record it and make it the success she has.
