Old Dominion ‘Snapback’ – Single Review

Just when we thought the state of mainstream country music couldn’t get worse, here comes Old Dominion to prove us wrong. If you happen to be looking for the definition of awful music, look no further, you’ll find it in Old Dominion. Seriously, I may sound like I’m being harsh, but if you’ve actually heard the record, you’ll actually know that I’m just being honest. I thought my torture was over once I finished reviewing their debut record, Meat & Candy, but alas it’s not, as I find myself reviewing the second single, “Snapback”. Their first single, “Break Up With Him” was not only boring, but also quite atrocious, yet it somehow managed to hit #1 on the Country Aircheck chart… That says a great deal about the mental capacity of mainstream listeners.Unfortunately for those of us who were hoping Old Dominion would just disappear forever, never to be heard from again, they appear to be sticking around. The band has recently released “Snapback” to radio as their second single, and it’s worse than their first single. For those of you who haven’t listened to the record yet, first off, you’re not missing anything, but second, it actually does get much worse than “Break Up With Him”. Compared to the rest of the record, “Break Up With Him” isn’t that bad, and this second single will prove that.

“Snapback” features a watered down rock sound, with drums and rumbling electric guitars. Lead singer, Matthew Ramsey, doesn’t sound like he’s really that thrilled to be singing the song, giving a very bland vocal delivery. The single features a lot of woo oh oh oh’s, evidently in an attempt to pump the song up and add some energy to it, but sadly it fails to do so. The track finds the narrator talking to a girl, trying to talk her into going out with him, begging for attention from her, all the while throwing a few supposed-to-be-compliments at her. There’s not much that can really be said about this single… at least nothing nice.

To put it bluntly: It’s bland, boring, annoying, generic, and not country. If this song was a day of the week, it’d be Wednesday, the day when we all just grit our teeth and deal with it, waiting for it to be over. Unfortunately, there’s really no way of getting over this hump… Might as well just bypass it completely.
