Pete Scobell, a celebrated Navy SEAL, competitive skier and athlete, and mountain climber, has officially made his foray into the country music world. For those that don’t see the connection between Scobell’s former activities/careers and his current one, it comes in the form of the guitar, which has been Scobell’s only constant companion through his adventures. “I didn’t just wake up one morning and decide I want to be a musician,” said Scobell, “It’s something I’ve done my whole life. My mom was a music teacher. She died when I was 10 months old and she left all her instruments. That’s how I learned to play. I was always trying to feel closer to her.”
Scobell worked as a part of an elite military team and used music as an escape, a way to cope and step away from it all for a little while. He is an accomplished singer and instrumentalist who’s already put in hours, singing and performing in barracks, dive bars, and anywhere else that allowed him to play his music and help people escape for a while. When Scobell was wounded in the line of duty, the hospital suggested music therapy, explaining that it was the best thing you could do to help your brain. What was just a passion soon became something that Scobell felt he had to do, needed to do. Specific events kept leading him back to the guitar and music, leading Scobell to come to the conclusion that “God keeps putting this thing back in my hands for a reason.”
Fast forward to now, Scobell has released “Walkin’ A Wire”, the lead single and title track from his new album by the same name. The single was written by Dierks Bentley, Ross Copperman, and David Lee Murphy. It is a classic guy chases girl song. The single opens with rumbling beat, driven by a drum and subtle electric guitars. You can’t help but think of Dierks Bentley when you first hear it. The single features the same sort of sound Bentley is known for, so much so, you can picture Bentley singing this song with ease. Scobell’s vocals are smooth with a touch of grit, and complement the song nicely. The track finds the narrator hopelessly crushing on a girl, and going through the moves to make her his. He tells her that he may seem cool and calm on the outside, but inside he’s “walking a wire, wire/ over a river of fire, fire/ taking a step at a time, girl/ making you mine girl/ out on the edge with one desire.” It’s a nice, mid-tempo song that’s easy on the ears.
“Walkin’ A Wire” serves as a taste of what’s to come on the record, and it certainly piqued my interest. I look forward to hearing more from Scobell, in the meantime, check out this new single.
