I have to admit, I wasn’t familiar with Sam Outlaw’s music until this video submission came through my email, but I assure you that has changed. For those of you who, like I was, aren’t familiar with Sam Outlaw, he’s a Los Angeles based singer/songwriter whose debut album, Angeleno, was released June 2015, and just in case you were wondering, Outlaw was Sam’s mother’s maiden name. “Ghost Town” appears to be the first single fromAngeleno, and what a single it is!
I loved “Ghost Town” as soon as the opening notes played. The song possesses a twangy, classic country sound reminiscent of Hank Williams, all the while mixing in a bit of troubadour country grit. In two words: it’s perfection. The song happens to stand out on an otherwise upbeat, sometimes funny record. “Ghost Town” is a darker tune, with a touch of sorrow and regret. The song was written in the wake of a family tragedy. Sam’s parents divorced when he was an adult, with his mother passing shortly after. Sam suddenly found that the home he once knew no longer existed. The video casts Sam in grimy, dingy surroundings that is industrial Los Angeles, contrasting the iconic glitz and glamour parts of the city. I have to say, Sam resembles Hank Williams Sr. in many of the shots, with his cowboy hat, sunglasses, and lean figure. The video complements the song perfectly, which is something to be said these days when many accompanying music videos leave you scratching your head as to how they actually relate to the song.
I for one am interested to hear more from the promising Sam Outlaw. In the meantime, “Ghost Town” is on repeat. Check it out!
