Alabama natives and up and coming country trio, The Cains, recently released their latest single, “Knock Knock” to radio. For those who are still unfamiliar with The Cains, the trio consists of siblings Madison, Taylor, and Logan. The siblings aren’t just singer-songwriters, but also multifaceted musicians who play guitar, piano, bass, harmonica, and more. It all started when the eldest sibling, Taylor, learned her first song on the piano at 5 years old, and a few years later, began teaching her younger siblings to sing harmony with her. A few years of practice and three college degrees later, the group has come together as The Cains.
You could say that their career started at the World Harvest Outreach Church where the trio gave their first performance of “Mary Did You Know” at the annual Christmas play. From that moment on, performing together became the new norm for the trio. The siblings were homeschooled together until their teenage years when they each enrolled in Hartselle High School. They trio would later attend the same university, with each graduating at the top of their class. Shortly after graduation, the group packed up and moved to Nashville, where they released their debut album, Stay On Board, in October of 2014 and their debut single “Be Yourself With Me” hit radio. The single gave The Cains a Top 50 hit.
In March 2015, hot off the heels of a successful radio debut, The Cains broke onto the UK country music scene with their first international appearance at London’s C2C festival. Following the UK tour, the trio released their latest EP, The Cains, in July 2015, which produced a Top 40 hit single, “Journey’s End”. With a promising future in country music, the sibling trio is back with a brand new single, “Knock Knock”.
The single opens with whistles and a catchy, infectious melody that draws the listener in. “Knock Knock” finds the narrator talking to a lover who seems to have grown distant, causing the relationship to stall and grow cold. The trio explains the situation with the line, “there’s a stranger where you stood before/ and he looks through me like I’m not there”, and the chorus, “Knock, Knock/ lights come on but nobody’s home/and I talk, but you turned off some time ago.” I have to say, lyrically, the song is catchy and creative, with an interesting rhyme scheme. My favorite line is “your unavailability is killing me”, don’t ask me why, it’s just a line that resonates with me.
The single has a mainstream sound that is flavored with instruments that are staples in the Roots/Americana genre. It should fit nicely on mainstream radio, enough to have a chance at airplay, all the while providing variety and a nice change to the rotation. Have a listen and see for yourself.
