Gravel-voiced English singer-songwriter and Cornwall native James Shead has brought classic country music themes of longing and love gone wrong to the streets of London – with authenticity and individuality – in the video for ‘Own Way Home.’ It’s the first single from his upcoming debut album, ‘A Light For The Fires,’ which is set for release Friday, March 18.

Shead’s voice alternates between a gentle, melodic narration and a soaring, aching chorus, when he recounts the story waking up to “an empty space lying next to me/But she ain’t lost, she ain’t scared/No, no, no/She knows her own way home.”

Formerly a drummer, Shead swapped sticks for strings when he taught himself guitar and launched a musical career as a singer, songwriter and storyteller. He has emerged as a festival favourite in the UK and has released two Eps, ‘This Heart, This Home’ and ‘Into the Warmth.’

Shead could be described as a Cornwall country boy and has said that the area has everything he needs. He cites the local music scene and Cornwall’s beaches as sources of inspiration for him as an artist. However, he says: “I enjoy playing everywhere and anywhere.”

Shead’s latest single is a taste of Transatlantica – that is, a folk-country hybrid that listeners both in the UK and the USA will understand and enjoy.
