This year was a particularly musical Christmas. As usual, It was terrible when it came to telling friends and family what I wanted Santa to bring, which left them no choice but to go for the safe bet of helping to expand my ever growing vinyl collection. This was my plan all along, as when it comes to vinyl, you’re open to a world of surprises. It’s a format that is once again on the up, but also had its golden years way before the digital era. Because of this, you never know exactly what your going to unwrap when holding that fateful, perfectly square present.
Perhaps pick of the bunch this year, was a remastered copy of Johnny Cash At San Quentin (Live). As you may have read in one of my previous posts, live albums are some of my favourite records, and this one is no exception. There’s something oh so nostalgic about live vinyl, and that’s feeling I can’t shake. Combine that with the game changer that was Johnny Cash and you’ve got a recipe for brilliance.
I’ve been a big Johnny Cash fan ever since I watched Walk the Line, so Live at San Quentin was always going to be a winning gift. It features such great tracks as A Boy Named Sue and the aforementioned Walk the Line. Cash oozes personality throughout the recording, and his steady rhythm and signature vocals are prominent throughout. I’d say that Live At San Quentin was a trip down memory lane, but for me it was before my time, it is however, undoubtedly a journey and a journey I’d well recommend you take.
