The Piano Guys are so great in their 9-cello arrangement of “Nearer My God to Thee.” It is lovely and low and a real joy to behold on the ears. The simple melody is enough to make the heart melt. Yes, I am writing of this arrangement of this old hymn for it is a great hymn of God. I love the video and the scenery too. Perfect arrangement and execution of beautiful harmonies the middle and upper cello parts. That upper cello part is nice and rich and is dripping with fine melody.
I like the switching of techniques from the ordinary style of playing to a pizzicato in the middle of the arrangement. It gives it such a nice texture that the ear needs. It’s something that we all need. It is so refreshing to hear the nine cellos playing together all in different parts of the park or field as seen in the video. The cellos were glistening in the sunshine with their new finish on them. They are beautiful instruments. The thing that is somewhat unusual is the way the melody of the original hymn is juxtaposed over these rapidly pacing chords in G minor of all sorts. Isn’t this hymn supposed to be in a major key—even for the purpose of edification? The different key puts this piece in a totally different light. Part of me thinks it’s cool, but I’ve read that minor keys are in the realms of bad spirits while the major keys lift up the positive and good spirits. The music itself is a great arrangement but I would do another arrangement of this in a major key that is more uplifting. Of course, with me bigger is better. The most intriguing aspect of the piece is the fact that nine cellos are playing this piece coordinating with one another. Take a listen to this and you will be astonished!
