Monteverdi Goes Sacred

If you are a listener of beautiful and harmonic things, may I recommend Claudio Monteverdi and his Missa In Illo Tempore? It is truly a beautiful, consonant harmonic sacred treasure that we would hope to glorify the Most High. The “Kyrie” is the most lusciously harmonic of all the movements of the piece. It’s so lovely in its execution. Can I just step a little bit back in time and bask in this moment? There. Thank you. The stripping down of just the choir and minor inclusion of orchestral instruments is so wholesome and good. Nothing like this exists today. The other movements like the “Sanctus” talk about the sanctification of the saints and the power of resurrection. It is keyed down in G-flat major with the standard, but beautiful V-I cadence. “Gloria” sings praises the Messiah “O Hosanna” for bringing slaves and sinners out of captivity. The “Benedictus” is very intimate. It’s very nicely done. The total collection of songs are in the forty to fifty minute range to keep you in the mindset of serving God and making melody in your heart to the Most High God. If you want Godly music to relax to, this is definitely for you!
