Nicolas Bacri Tonal and Nontonal Music

Paris born composer Nicolas Bacri has a collection of solo strings and string quartets that are almost comparable to Olivier Messien. I can hear some twelve tone stuff going on in the background of the texture, really makes it shine. The colors are very vibrant and yet oscillating with such frequency that it’s almost hard to keep up with the changes. The Prelude and Fugue are very dark and dissonant in nature and this sets the tone for the entire collection. The Piano Sonata No. 2 has a penchant from going up chromatically but using the dissonant techniques that could be found when using a twelve tone row, and then going down a second before the starting interval. Later on there are some elements of consonance mixed with whole-tone scales to make the pieces really pop. If you’re interested in high art pieces, this would be the one for you.
