Leslie Bassett's Echoes From an Unknown World

Along side his famous clarinet pieces, Leslie Bassett shines with the greatness that is otherworldly. Implementing the twelve tone row structure to create this picturesque abode of the unknown. One of the piano pieces that is actually for piano and strings has the pianist using twelve tone rows in forward motion as well as retrograde to create this uncertain vibe. Movement Two of the piece sees some of the twelve tone row in harmony in the higher woodwinds. It really has some interesting color going on that I wouldn’t normally hear in my everyday music listening.

However, my ears do long for consonance. If your ears long for consonance, this is not the collection for you. If you like twelve-tone rows and dissonant, mathematical and diversely colorful music, this can keep you entertained. The most dissonant movement of the whole collection is Movement 3 (Fast), where woodwinds of several different registers culminate using all different starting points for twelve tone rows. Listen to this if you want highly atmospheric and otherworldly type of music.
