This little known work that is blowing up into a bigger and bigger work for the wind band is catching people’s eyes as an ode to sailing on the open seas, breathing crisp sea air. The textures of this piece are very bright, stravinskian sort of texture. The sailing brass in the key of F is really brilliant and inspiring. The scurrying of the woodwinds is always awesome. I see this being part of a disney piece. The band down there in Dallas does such an honorable job with these commissions. They really are active as an ensemble on the move. The one thing to love about this piece is the various colors. Whether it’s a band or orchestra, the various colors and how they harmonize together is always something that has given me great joy and wonder at how to write music just the way it is written by other professionals. This happens to be one of his best pieces for the wind band and it is my hope that this piece stands up like all the other ones he has composed in the past.
