Alburger's Unique Opera

The music of Mark Alburger is very astounding. It’s a completely different aesthetic than most would be used to. Mordake, the leader of a group of recordings of Alburger’s works, produced many recordings of this aesthetic. Many of the works on there have a singing vocalist, a narrator, a thin organ texture and maybe a synthesizer here and there. It’s kind of like lyric opera in its own way. Mordake’s recordings start with the “Overture.” Then, they progress to the others like “I Am No Murderer!” It is noticeable that Alburger picks these dreamy keys and chooses consistent stepwise motion from a major to a minor key. It sounds like pan diatonicism. It sounds like the synthesizer or other instruments aside from the organ are in a close but different key while the organ and voice remained in the same key. Many other of the songs are the same style—a walking vocal line that is almost talking with interspersing opera singing with the organ chorus. The whole set makes an oddly entertaining set.
