Schubert's Ave Maria

To accompany anyone’s guilt whether in sin or not, this piece “Ave Maria” by Franz Schubert is absolutely stunning. It is interesting and quite amazing to think of what the composer who was to compose this mega opus of a work. This made even more evident by the fact that Schubert suffered from significant depression and anxiety among other battles throughout his young life. This piece really represents that fabulous yet painful struggle. I believe all artists struggle with these, especially composers, because as this composer and writer can tell you, the days and nights are really lonely, despite the fact that not a lot of people understand us. We are crazy to some people in the world. I think this is what Schubert went through most of his life.

The height of his neuroses was captured in the Spinning Wheel work. Call him crazy. But in his “Ave Maria” he reveals a lighter side to him—a more subdued and hopeful side. The beautiful nature of the piece and how the music envelops the words is just genius. This author could tell by the mere sound of this music that Schubert was paying homage to his Lord. It has been used for a variety of services in the Catholic religion and the Protestant.

The “Ave Maria” comes from the seven song cycle Frauliem am See, a quasi-religious cycle. It went onto be one of the most performed cycles of the decade in which it was written and many generations to come. This song cycle and the top song “Ave Maria” has been covered in large circles by the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, just to name a couple.

The opening line is more than enough to melt your heart and move you to a higher form of consciousness. It brings me to a higher realization of the spirit realm. I’m just wondering about the afterlife and this song is a beautiful tribute to God and has been used in worship for a long while. One thing is for certain that even though Schubert’s life was a mere 31 years, he sure composed some of the most enduring music in the repertoire today.
