Grant Lee Phillips Stromg As A Buffalo

Grant Lee Buffalo were one of those bands that never got enough recognition from the media and the audience. Their 1999 debut Fuzzy, a fusion of alternative rock and Americana is a true masterpiece. They have only released three albums in their career. After the band broke up, Grant Lee Phillips continued with his career and have made eight solo albums, all in folk, Americana and alternative rock niche. His latest album The Narrows is a continuation of his exploration of musical and historical roots through folk and Americana.

On this album, same as on any other, his recognizable tenor is the strongest asset. His vocal has proven to be an impeccable instrument, suitable for any genre. If you add his unmistakable feeling for melody and arrangements, it becomes clear why Grant Lee has more fans than his band ever did. The creative process of this album was marked by his migration from Los Angeles to Nashville. The impact of the new environment on his sound is conspicuous, both in production (for example, bittersweet country Tennessee Rain or honky tonk Rollin Pin) and in arrangements that are embellished with banjo and pedal steel guitar. For all of those who adored Grant Lee Buffalo, there is remarkable Loaded Gun that sounds like it came off from Fuzzy.

Phillips' lyrics are inspired by his childhood memories, his life and landscapes of California. He is also influenced by his historic heritage. He is a direct descendent of those who were part of The Road of Tears, one of the most brutal crimes ever committed on Native Americans by the government of The United States.

Listening to his vocal and his music in general is a sincere pleasure. The Narrows radiates calmness and warmth. It is a music that comes directly from the heart of an artist. If you have a heart, you should give it a show. If you don't have a heart, you will grow it with The Narrows.
