I'm not used to this. In 2017 being a Radiohead fan has been uncharacteristically rewarding. Not only am I still obsessed with last year's A Moon Shaped Pool, not only have I rediscovered OK Computer for the fifth or sixth time due to its 20 year anniversary, but now I get funny, bittersweet, music videos for popular B-sides "I Promise" and now "Lift". I started off my Radiohead fandom by waiting four years each for the last three albums, and now I can't get away from them.
"Lift" is an absolute treat of a song. The video is hilarious, and deeply unsettling, which is the typical criteria for one of the band's videos, and the song itself transports me back to when I discovered their dark charms. "Lift", as listened to without the context of being an Ok Computer B-side is a remarkably sweet song, but it wouldn't fit on any of the band's studio albums. It's a hidden gem in which Radiohead tried on a lighter persona and deserves to be celebrated as such.
