Campfires in Winter: Free Me from the Howl

It’s not every day you get to review a band that came from your high school. Back then Campfires in Winter called themselves Overcry, a name that they were wise to change. They were the best our school had to offer but like most high school bands I expected them to fizzle out. I’m glad to say that they haven’t, and have been working hard to break through for the past decade with Free Me From the Howl the song that should, if there’s any justice, complete that process.

You may think I’m biased since I knew them from before, the opposite is true. Remember that I’m a music writer, who can’t play the simplest instruments, so when a band full of people I know release a single you better believe I’ll be, let’s be honest here, the hardest to impress. All reviewers are spiteful in this way, I think. So it’s with great pleasure, with egg well and truly on my face, to report that Campfires in Winter are an immensely talented band, creating textured, tender music, with great harmonies, and seamless flow. They also get points for setting their music video in Glasgow’s Barras for that added touch of authenticity.
