Cat Power has always been something of a mystical force. Kind of like Fiona Apple, Hope Sandoval and Kim Gordon mixed up and laid out on a sheet of music. Being able to properly place Power in a genre would simply be dis-satisfying because as a musician Power has covered nearly every sector. And then some more. Maybe Power is more noteably known for the essence of Folk Acoustic material released a few years ago. However, it is with 'Ruin' off of the SUN album. Even though this album was released in 2012, this album started a movement for Power towards a more avant-garde experimental transition.
'Ruin' issue's out a sort of unexplained argument. Unexplained because this question has been raised and stumbled upon by people for an endless amount of time. What is enough? When we see other's without, yet we still complain about the things we are left without? Maybe Power is questioning the material things in life and why people intend to express the complaint to need, need and need some more. All the while others go without and live with only the most needed essentials. Hopelessly Power ushers out that we live in ruins, unable to just be and live.
