Tisiphone is a band from Lyon with the fresh debut album titled Tisiphone 1t LP. They have been dropping singles over the past three years before they released the full length album under Automate Records label.
The name of the band refers to Greek mythology, and it can be observed from the lyrics that the story of the band itself has a mythical background. Tisiphone is a coldwave band tentative to reinterpret that genre and create a new one. That’s pretty ambitious, If you ask me, but considering the fact that France had an intriguing coldwave and post-punk scene in the past, maybe this is not a reflection of megalomania.
The band is leaning on tradition of French coldwave and tries to offer a pristine perspective to the peculiar genre that is not very popular today. It is always inspiring for a band to try to reinvent the sound of the past. Tisiphone are looking for their space in dream, tribal rituals, oniric symbols and hermetic expressions. Described music does not fall into your ear right away, because the band keeps its distance. There is a significant Goth vibe to them.
Debut comprises eight long songs sang in English, which may be a mistake. If they really wanted to reinterpret tradition, it would be more effective If they were singing in French. As their style is cold claire-obscure post-rock, they are keen to sound overly post-rock in instrumental section. Empty Streets is where you may hear that the most. First singles Looking Down and Black Velvet are the most successful numbers, sounding like they were released in the 80s.
Desire is a typical post-punk song with memorable vocal, while the closing Spiritual Object concludes the record in a chill vibe.
To conclude: coldwave has never sounded so layered.
