Looks like all of my lineup dreams are coming to life with – a new alternative band that seems to be a organic fusion of The Smiths and The Cranberries. I won’t lie that both bands have always had a special place in my rock list. And, with Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries taking responsibility of vocals and Andy Rourke of The Smiths covering up the bass, this band is everything I had expected. The welcome addition of New York based DJ Olé Koretsky to the trio, completes D.A.R.K and gives it a unique identity and a touch of electronic.
Just out with their debut album “Science Agrees” via Cooking Vinyl in May, they have also shared three songs off their record so far - titled “Curvy”, “Loosen the Noose”and “Gunfight”.
D.A.R.K’s music brings together the melodic sensibilities of both The Smiths and The Cranberries and melody is primary in most of their songs too.
While, “Curvy” is a more ambient track with less stress on lyrics and overlapping harmonized vocals, Gunfight delightfully reminds of The Cranberries’ “Zombie” with its lyrics. If I absolutely need to draw parallels between existing bands, ‘Loose the Noose” might vaguely qualify close to Wilco’s sound - with similar laid back grooves, subdued keyboard strains, and a lagging bass. However, the thing about D.A.R.K is every song sounds different from its predecessor. Only the “darkness” of the sound seems to be eminent in all of its song and perhaps it is where it draws its name from.
