Jurado has come a long way from minimalistic romantic to the status of an innovator who is not afraid to flirt with different recording techniques. He is also not afraid to put few genres into one song.
Described like this, the album sounds like pretentious slop. I highly recommend to give it a chance. Even in his most complex songs, such as Walrus where psychedelic rock meets jazz, Jurado succeeds to find a great melody that is strong enough to rise above the level of experimentation. You will also find simple folk story Sam And Davy and fantastic anthem for potheads Mellow Blue Polka Dot. But the most important thing you will find is Jurado’s exploding talent on a track called Taqoma. In less than 4 minutes of music, you get everything: from southern blues and psychedelic rock to guitar distortions and Indian back vocal. I know who I was then and I know who I am now, sings Jurado in On The Land Blues, another pearl on the album.
