Psychedelic King Of Eclecticism

Album reviewed by:

Introvert from Seattle says his latest record is like a bad trip in which two soulmates come together. ’There is no plan. You will see the world together or you will see what you think the world is. You will get out and experience the life. You will live in the moment. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, let me present you the brilliant James Jurado and the latest part of his psychedelic trilogy. After Maraqoporn and Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son, he gave creative birth to Visions Of Us On The Land. It is, so far,  his most ambitious record.

Imagine the cocktail with My Morning Jacket, King Crimson, Sufjan Stevens and Flaming Lips as ingredients. Jurado has come a long way from minimalistic romantic to the status of an innovator who is not afraid to flirt with different recording techniques. He is also not afraid to put few genres into one song.

Described like this, the album sounds like pretentious slop. I highly recommend to give it a chance. Even in his most complex songs, such as Walrus where psychedelic rock meets jazz, Jurado succeeds to find a great melody that is strong enough to rise above the level of experimentation. You will also find simple folk story Sam And Davy and fantastic anthem for potheads Mellow Blue Polka Dot. But the most important thing you will find is Jurado’s exploding talent on a track called Taqoma. In less than 4 minutes of music, you get everything: from southern blues and psychedelic rock to guitar distortions and Indian back vocal. I know who I was then and I know who I am now, sings Jurado in On The Land Blues, another pearl on the album.

Talent has never sounded so great. Damien Jurado is well aware of his position in the world and his work has never been so confident. With that being said, buy this record right now and bow down to the new psychedelic king.
