YFJHAY Perspective on Lifestyle

YFJHAY (born Robert Gabun Jr.) is an independent West Coast hip-hop artist based in Vallejo, California. 

I decided to become an artist back in high school. Me and the homies used to spend hours making beats on GarageBand and freestyling over them just for fun. The more I did it, the more I realized music was something I genuinely loved and connected with. What started as kicking it with friends turned into a real passion, and that’s when I knew I wanted to take being an artist seriously and pursue it for myself.

MBNEL, P-Lo, Bambu, and OMB Peezy. I relate to their stories and the struggles they’ve been through, and a lot of their music reflects experiences that connect with my own journey. Their music and work ethic helped shape me as an artist, so being able to share a stage with them would be both inspiring and motivating. I feel like we’d connect on a deeper level because of our similar backgrounds and the messages we put into our music.

I’d describe YFJHAY’s music as a blend of traditional Bay Area rhythms, modern West Coast hip-hop, and raw, authentic storytelling. His music is heavily inspired by real-life experiences, giving listeners an honest look into the challenges, lessons, and realities of growing up in communities impacted by gang activity. His lyrics are personal and narrative-driven, focusing on survival, ambition, growth, and overcoming obstacles. What makes his sound stand out is his ability to effortlessly switch between hard-hitting rap flows and melodic vocals, creating records that are both emotionally powerful and easy to connect with. While rooted in Bay Area culture, his music also incorporates modern trap influences, giving it a sound that feels both authentic and current.
