Damien Doddy Perspective on The Winehouse
I’m Damien Doddy, a neo-soul artist creating cinematic, late-night music built around mood, memory, and feeling.
I don’t just make songs—I create spaces people can step into. ‘The Winehouse’ is one of those spaces.
My work lives in that late-night space where emotion, memory, and atmosphere all come together.
My background is rooted in a mix of hip-hop, soul, and R&B, but I’ve always been drawn to artists who create atmosphere and emotion in their music.
With ‘The Winehouse,’ I leaned into that side of myself—the storytelling, the mood, and the feeling. Artists like Amy Winehouse showed me how powerful it is to make music that feels lived-in and personal, and that definitely influenced the direction of this record.
I remember being a toddler in the backseat of my mother’s car, surrounded by the sound of classic R&B and Motown.
That was my introduction to music—melody, soul, and emotion. It’s something that’s stayed with me and still shows up in the music I make today.
Music has been with me since grade school—I was always rapping, always singing.
But it wasn’t until after I graduated high school that I made the decision to really pursue it as an artist and take it beyond just something I loved into something I was building.
The Winehouse’ sits in the neo-soul space, with strong elements of R&B and jazz. It’s a mood-driven record that leans into atmosphere as much as melody.
Over the last three years, I’ve grown a lot in my songwriting and how I approach building a record.
I’ve always had the ability to move between different genres, but more recently I’ve started fully bringing that into what I release—being more intentional about expanding my sound and showing different sides of my artistry.
My music covers a wide range of themes—love, memory, lifestyle, and real-life experiences.
Sometimes it’s deeper and more reflective, and other times it’s about energy and vibe. I don’t limit it—I let the feeling of the record decide where it goes.
I’d say Lauryn Hill.
The way she brings together hip-hop, soul, and meaningful storytelling has always stood out to me. I connect with that approach, and I feel like there’s a natural alignment in the kind of emotion and depth we both bring to the music.
