Winnie Ama Perspective on Daisies
I love writing music because it’s a powerful and efficient way to process my emotions and create something positive and productive out of them. Culture is shaped by stories. I think it’s important for every type of person to share their experiences so we can understand each other better and on a deeper level. I think that the more stories and perspectives are heard, the more cohesive society will be as a whole. I also think it is so fun to create art with people, to collaborate and create with likeminded people and then to perform and meet even more people on the same wavelength.
The melody comes first, and I think the melody usually has words wrapped inside it that you need to unwrap. You can only unwrap them if you pay attention. I agree with Paul McCartney's theory that you don't really write songs, you discover them, they already exist in the universe and you're like an architect uncovering them, gently with your brush in the soil after you start to dig and you've hit a bone.
The song was commissioned by North Star and is inspired by Frederick Douglass's visit to Belfast. It drew inspiration from his moving quote: "I shall always remember the people of Belfast, and the kind friends I now see around me... wherever else I feel myself to be a stranger, I will remember I have a home in Belfast." I truly resonate with that sentiment, as I feel the same way about Belfast, and I appreciate that we share this deep affection for the people there. I grew up with the same friends I spend time with now.
I wrote it about a specific day when we went to Cranmore park at lunch at the start of summer before school ended forever and chatted about our friendship and how we’d be friends no matter what.
