The Creation of Sensr
The Clanger is electronic in nature, but also psychedelic rock mixed with chillwave downtempo. The Clanger is actually is 3/4 time signature. It was not planned that way but it worked out and I love it. Funny story about this song, the drums were originally written with finger drums on a keyboard. Then transferred to a drum kit and performed on sensory percussion using hand selected sounds. I have a live video recording of the first take on drums, and ended up keeping the take. My metronome in Ableton was still on 4/4 time. I had not discovered it yet. So, not only was it first take, it was no metronome either. It would not do me any good to look at a metromome in the wrong time signature. I never looked at it once. This taught me a vaulable lessons as well, to always figure out the timing before hand.
After about 15 years of going through band after band and not getting anything accomplished I decided I was going to learn the instruments so I can play music without anyone else. I set a plan in motion, it was a 10 year plan to move to TN and build a house. Get the house paid off and reduce my bills and stress. Now I have ample time for music and that was my goal. I have never been in a better position to pursue this dream of mine. Honestly, my dream at this point is to just be able to make a living with music somehow. Wheather it be teaching, or playing live, or selling samples. Maybe all of it...
As a drummer I prefer to hear some kind of sound to get inspiration going. But I love to be the one to lay down a beat too. My process revolves around the freedom to inspire myself and being in the moment with the music. I make some kind of a connection with the music. It starts to grow on me and I can't get it out of my head (because it's been played a 50 times in Ableton). That's when I know I like it and I'm falling in love with it. You have to be in love with it. It's the only way you can continue to play it over and over again, night after night. You must love it and the people that come to see you.
When it comes to vocals, if I am planning to record them for production, I need them finished, not partly finished, not rough draft, complete. Drums that I write are performed around the vocals. If the vocals were not there I gaurentee the drums would be different. Currently I am writing instrumental music so vocals are a non issue. I do have a couple songs with vocals on the books for the future. They are starting to get more of my attention...
What inspired the song Scent of Socu?
I would say that most of the time with me it's the sounds that inspire me. I am really in the moment when it comes to music. Music is a place where I can break the rules because it's all mine, at least right now it is. Scent of Socu started as a main synth sound that inspired the entire song. I took that one sound and made it my own in many different ways using sound design and plugins within Ableton. Gave it some structure and groove to finish it off. I try not to overthink them, overthinking can really ruin progress. I keep it simple most of the time. I am absolutely thrilled with how this song turned out. I just love the simple drums I came up with. It's a keeper.
I have a sticky past with music and that is exactly what keeps me going. I'm not going to let it beat up or down and make me want to quit. Music is a part of my life and really has been since I was a kid playing the marching snare drum in a drum and bugle corp. And watching my granddpa play and sing to a dancing crowd. Music is deeply rooted in my family.
In the past I had plenty of great projects that all could have went somewhere, great singers and writers. But something always stopped me from completing my goals, maybe it was my fault, but I never quit any of those projects. What I have always wanted to do with music is to finish it and go play it live, build a fan base and a community, and keep putting out great tunes. Unless it's only a hobby, but I always wanted it to be more than a hobby.
I have always had a hard time finding the right people with the same goals. And this is also what has lead me down the path to being a solo artist (Sensr). Without my rocky past, Sensr may have never happened, and I am a firm believer of "everything happens for a reason." So there is absolutely no hard feelings toward anyone I ever worked with. What is meant to be, will be. Happy jamming to all of you. I love you all.
The fact that I have been a part of some great music in my past is prove to me that I can do this, that keeps me going. Finding out that you inspire others' to write music and to get it finished, that keeps me going.
Hey everyone — Sensr is a production alias of Musician | Artist - Benjamin Baker
Sensr started as a simple idea: if you can’t find the right people to make the music you want, make it yourself. I spent years learning everything I could — producing, mixing, experimenting, failing, and trying again — until I could bring the sounds in my head to life.
I work from home, keep my bills light, and own my space — so I’ve got the freedom to chase music full-time. This has all been part of a ten-year plan that somehow wrapped up in nine. And now? I’m finally here, ready to jam live, meet new people, and share what I’ve been building.
So, what is Sensr?
Sensr is my solo project — a blend of electronic textures, live drums, and ambient grooves that make your body move and your mind drift. I produce everything myself in Ableton: synths, keys, bass, guitars, and yes, plenty of drums.
For rhythm, I use a hybrid setup with Sensory Percussion, acoustic drums, and electronic kits — picking whatever fits the mood of the track. Vocals? They’re a work in progress. (Think of them as “coming attractions.”)
I’m currently releasing one track a month, so stick around — there’s always something new on the way.
Oh, and merch and extras are dropping soon too.
