Joey Nelson Perspective on Focus

it lives mostly in R&B, but it pulls from trapsoul and a little bit of hip-hop influence too. It’s emotional, melodic, and still knocks — not just something you hear, but something you feel. I’m not really chasing genre lines though — I just make what feels honest in the moment.

Chris Brown, no question. I grew up listening to him and respect how he commands the stage and connects with the crowd. Even though I don’t dance, I admire his work ethic and energy — I know touring with him would push me to bring my best every night and grow as an artist.

i’m Joey Nelson. Music’s always been how I make sense of what I’m feeling. I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer — I record and mix everything myself. It’s not just a job to me, it’s how I breathe. I don’t care about fitting in or sounding like anybody else. I just want to make music that feels real — for me, and for whoever needs it.

I used to watch this old Michael Jackson movie where he transforms into a car — I was probably too young to even fully get it, but I was hooked. From there, I started listening to all his music and just fell in love with it. That was my real intro to music, and it stuck with me ever since.

it wasn’t really one big moment — it was more like a slow build. But I think the real shift happened when I realized making music was the only thing that felt natural to me. I’ve worked regular jobs, done what I had to do, but nothing else ever gave me that same sense of purpose. Once I started writing and recording seriously, I knew I couldn’t walk away from it. It just made sense.
