Nakima Perspective on On My Way

I am Nakima and I create.

I come from a Caribbean household where both of my parents were in the military so I moved around a lot. I absorbed a lot of different things from different environments, cultures, and experiences which influenced my music in different ways.

Dancing in my parents room while my dad played reggae on the stereo.

I always had an interest in performing since I can remember, but when I went to my first concert and saw Sade perform, that solidified it for me.

Alternative RnB/ Pop

I started studying different artists from different genres. I listened to different components of their songs from melodies, vocal skill, delivery, arrangements, etc and allowed the things I was absorbing to evolve my sound naturally.

I do not limit my exploration to anything specific. I will write about anything that inspires me, but I do enjoy writing about love cause it is a feeling that is very moving to me.

Haley Smalls. She is my blueprint for my path as an artist. She took me under her wing and dedicated so much time to teaching me everything she learned on her journey being an artist. So I would love to continue learning and growing with her, while simultaneously being her biggest fan on her tour.

Inspirational.

Fun, real, and healing.

Michael Jackson. He is the greatest artist of all time to me.

It changes constantly, things just hit differently depending on what I’m feeling that day.

Brandy, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley.

Every performance I do would be a dream performance for me.

Rihanna.

Love.

Passionate, hard-working, and loving

Streaming Platforms.

Yes I do. I used to force myself to stick to a schedule and operate off of that schedule but I later learned that setting an intention and then letting things unfold naturally instead of stressing about a schedule allowed me to make more progress and keep a peace of mind. Win-win.

I saw a video on TikTok of someone covering a song I wrote and it made me teary eyed. I felt so grateful to experience that for the first time.

It is not something I am planning, but potentially inspiring people to create and step into their truth by me just doing what I love doing would make me happy to see.

My definition of success would be having the freedom to create without limiations. I prefer not to measure success through materialistic gain, for me it is about happiness, love and alignment.

In my eyes an artist has the ability to influence, heal, empower, and help raise awareness through their art and truth.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Leaving my old life and reestablishing myself in a new country.

Publicly failing.

I miss the feeling music used to give me growing up. There was a certain passion and love you could hear and deeply feel in music that I do not feel as often anymore.

A lot of different things, I worked at a place called Bush’s chicken my senior year of high school. Dennys for a year in college. Ross dress for less for the rest of my time in college, and lastly a Physical Therapist Technician.

I have a passion for learning so it just made me a student to life. Everything I learn I am able to apply to my music in some shape or form.

I have experienced feelings of loneliness throughout my journey. I do not fight it or suppress it, I allow the experience to express itself into the music I create because it is real and healing.

Appreciating everything around you. In appreciation you find inspiration.

Nature.

Performance Art.

It is not something I think about, but if someone told me I reminded them of an artist they love it would make me feel happy.

Do not force anything!

My appreciation for life.

I just hope to reach and inspire as many people as I’m meant to with my music.
