Who are you and what do you do?
Answer:

I am Nakima and I create.

How does your background play into this song?
Answer:

I come from a Caribbean household where both of my parents were in the military so I moved around a lot. I absorbed a lot of different things from different environments, cultures, and experiences which influenced my music in different ways.  

What is your earliest memory of listening to music?
Answer:

Dancing in my parents room while my dad played reggae on the stereo.

At what moment in your life did you decide to become an artist / performer?
Answer:

I always had an interest in performing since I can remember, but when I went to my first concert and saw Sade perform, that solidified it for me.

What genres does this release play into?
Answer:

Alternative RnB/ Pop

How has your sound and style evolved in the last 3 years?
Answer:

I started studying different artists from different genres. I listened to different components of their songs from melodies, vocal skill, delivery, arrangements, etc and allowed the things I was absorbing to evolve my sound naturally. 

What themes do you explore throughout your music?
Answer:

I do not limit my exploration to anything specific. I will write about anything that inspires me, but I do enjoy writing about love cause it is a feeling that is very moving to me. 

If you could go on tour with any artist, who would it be and why?
Answer:

Haley Smalls. She is my blueprint for my path as an artist. She took me under her wing and dedicated so much time to teaching me everything she learned on her journey being an artist. So I would love to continue learning and growing with her, while simultaneously being her biggest fan on her tour. 

How would you describe your favorite artist's music to someone who has never heard them before?
Answer:

 Inspirational.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
Answer:

Fun, real, and healing.

If you could attend a performance by any artist, dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
Answer:

Michael Jackson. He is the greatest artist of all time to me. 

What is your favorite song you have made, and why?
Answer:

It changes constantly, things just hit differently depending on what I’m feeling that day.

If you could only listen to three artists for the rest of your life, who would you choose and why?
Answer:

Brandy, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley.

What does your dream performance look like?
Answer:

Every performance I do would be a dream performance for me. 

Who is your dream artist or musician to collaborate with?
Answer:

 Rihanna.

What do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?
Answer:

Love.

What three words would you want your fanbase to use to describe you?
Answer:

Passionate, hard-working, and loving 

What is your favorite way of sharing your music?
Answer:

Streaming Platforms.

Do you practice? How has your practice changed over time?
Answer:

Yes I do. I used to force myself to stick to a schedule and operate off of that schedule but I later learned that setting an intention and then letting things unfold naturally instead of stressing about a schedule allowed me to make more progress and keep a peace of mind. Win-win. 

What is the most memorable response you've had to your work?
Answer:

I saw a video on TikTok of someone covering a song I wrote and it made me teary eyed. I felt so grateful to experience that for the first time. 

How do you plan on being a game-changer within your genre?
Answer:

It is not something I am planning, but potentially inspiring people to create and step into their truth by me just doing what I love doing would make me happy to see. 

What is your definition of success as an artist? How do you measure this success?
Answer:

My definition of success would be having the freedom to create without limiations. I prefer not to measure success through materialistic gain, for me it is about happiness, love and alignment. 

What role do you believe the artist has in our society?
Answer:

In my eyes an artist has the ability to influence, heal, empower, and help raise awareness through their art and truth. 

Name a song that best represents success to you, and why?
Answer:

 The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. 

What has been your scariest experience while pursuing music?
Answer:

Leaving my old life and reestablishing myself in a new country. 

What has been your most embarassing moment while pursuing music?
Answer:

Publicly failing.

If you could alter the music industry in any way, what would you change and why?
Answer:

I miss the feeling music used to give me growing up. There was a certain passion and love you could hear and deeply feel in music that I do not feel as often anymore. 

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
Answer:

A lot of different things, I worked at a place called Bush’s chicken my senior year of high school. Dennys for a year in college. Ross dress for less for the rest of my time in college, and lastly a Physical Therapist Technician. 

How have your other passions reinforced your process of making music?
Answer:

I have a passion for learning so it just made me a student to life. Everything I learn I am able to apply to my music in some shape or form. 

Has being an artist made your life lonely? How do you counteract this?
Answer:

I have experienced feelings of loneliness throughout my journey. I do not fight it or suppress it, I allow the experience to express itself into the music I create because it is real and healing.

How would you define having an artistic outlook on life?
Answer:

Appreciating everything around you. In appreciation you find inspiration. 

What is your favorite work of art?
Answer:

Nature.

Which mediums of art do you most identify with?
Answer:

Performance Art. 

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.
Answer:

It is not something I think about, but if someone told me I reminded them of an artist they love it would make me feel happy. 

What is the most significant lesson you've learned through being an artist?
Answer:

Do not force anything!

Do you have one main reason driving you to continue making music?
Answer:

My appreciation for life.

What is your overarching goal as an artist?
Answer:

I just hope to reach and inspire as many people as I’m meant to with my music.
