What is your overarching goal as an artist?
Answer:

I want to create songs that are timeless.  Years from now, I hope someone connects with the stories I've created.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
Answer:

I'm a geologist by training.   I love fossils and rocks.   when I travel. I always research the geology of the places I'm staying.

What is your definition of success as an artist? How do you measure this success?
Answer:

Success is a moving target.  I think you need to define success day by day.  I'm happy to get to record and perform my music.  Life changes fast.  Enjoy the ride.

What three words would you want your fanbase to use to describe you?
Answer:

Rustbelt Country Music

What do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?
Answer:

I want people to connect with an emotion or a memory.  I want folks to feel that a song belongs to them in some way.  I think that's true of all mediums of art. Making connections with music and lyrics is what inspires me the most.

Who is your dream artist or musician to collaborate with?
Answer:

I think working with Sturgil Simpson would be amazing.  I'm not sure i could keep up with a creative mind like his, but I'd be willing to try.

What is the strangest place where you have discovered a new song?
Answer:

I was dreaming about playing a melody with a couple band mates.  I woke up in the middle of the dream and ran to my home studio to record as much as I could remember.   The next day I listened to the "rough" (really rough) recordings I made at 2 a.m. and started writing lyrics around the melody I dreamed.

What is your favorite song you have made, and why?
Answer:

I wrote a song with Alex Dooley in Nashville called "it sure goes fast" that makes me tear up every time I play it.  It's a message from a parent to their children to appreciate life when they are still young.   The chorus starts with "Stop and smell the roses, don't race the hands of time..."  and ends with " hold on to your hat, cause man it sure goes fast ".

If you could attend a performance by any artist, dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
Answer:

Id love to have seen Elvis live.   The voice. The electricity.  He was a master entertainer!

What does your dream performance look like?
Answer:

Austin City Limits. Period.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
Answer:

I call my brand "Rustbelt Country ".  It's a blend of Country roots instilled by my Texas born parents and blues/rock influences of growing up in the working class towns of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

What themes do you explore throughout your music?
Answer:

My heart is with ordinary people.  I watch the way ordinary people endure through hardship and loss.  My favorite theme has to be gratitude.   Life isn't easy, but you can always find something to be thankful for.

If you could go on tour with any artist, who would it be and why?
Answer:

I think Chris Stapleton really is the full package of what it is to be singer-songwriter.  He's an amazing writer and composer. And that voice! Some of my favorite songs feature him and his wife harmonizing. It's a magical combination of 2 very talented singers.  I'd love to be able to tour with them.

How has your sound and style evolved in the last 3 years?
Answer:

I used to obsess on finding lyrics and themes that had some "profound " message or lesson.   I started to notice that the songs that people connected to were just good stories that were relatable or accessible.  Writing in Nashville really helped me find the voice and message was looking for.

What genres does this release play into?
Answer:

Souls of the Working class was recorded in Nashville and has a distinct country feel.  But lyrically it sweats folk and amercana.

At what moment in your life did you decide to become an artist / performer?
Answer:

We used to sit at my Grandpa's feet while he made up funny stories to make us laugh.  I wanted to be like him and make people feel joy that way.  One day my brother brought home a guitar. From that moment music became my catalyst to tell stories.  I was hooked.

What is your earliest memory of listening to music?
Answer:

My earlist memories were of listening to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.  They were story tellers.  I was drawn to that.

Who are you and what do you do?
Answer:

My name is Joseph Hosey.   I'm a singer-songwriter and country music recording artist.

How does your background play into this song?
Answer:

My newest song "Souls of the Working Class " is an anthem about every day Americans scraping through life trying to find the dream of prosperity in a world where the deck seems to be stacked against them.  I grew up in the Midwest rustbelt,  where the work ethic of my parents and their generation were able to make a life.  These days it's getting harder for Working folks just to get by.
