Who are you and what do you do?
Answer:

As Walters Fall, I am an indie folk/alternative singer-songwriter hailing from Ontario, Canada. My music is deeply rooted in storytelling, blending authentic acoustic melodies with introspective lyrics that reflect personal experiences and universal themes.

Beyond creating music, I am deeply involved in community initiatives. The 'Guitars for Kids' program, which I spearheaded, has provided instruments and mentorship to aspiring young musicians, fostering a new generation of talent.

How does your background play into this song?
Answer:

My personal background deeply influences the song "I'm OK." This track is a reflection of my own struggles with mental health and the journey toward acknowledging and confronting those challenges. The lyrics delve into the facade of appearing fine while grappling with internal turmoil, a theme that resonates with my experiences. Through "I'm OK," I aim to shed light on the often-hidden battles many face, encouraging openness and dialogue about mental well-being.

What genres does this release play into?
Answer:

"I'm OK" primarily falls within the indie folk genre, characterized by its acoustic instrumentation and introspective lyrics. The song also incorporates elements of alternative and acoustic rock, reflecting my evolving musical style.

How has your sound and style evolved in the last 3 years?
Answer:

Over the past three years, my sound and style have undergone a significant evolution. Initially rooted in acoustic rock, my early work was heavily influenced by artists like Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, and Aaron Lewis, reflecting a raw and grunge-inspired aesthetic.

As time progressed, I began to explore more introspective themes, delving deeper into the human experience. This shift led to a more refined and haunting sound, characterized by a blend of indie folk and alternative elements. My lyrics became more personal, often addressing topics such as mental health and self-discovery.

Collaborations with mental health organizations and initiatives like the 'Guitars for Kids' program have also influenced my music, adding layers of depth and social awareness to my work. This journey has allowed me to create a more authentic and emotionally resonant connection with my audience.

What themes do you explore throughout your music?
Answer:

Throughout my music, I explore a range of deeply personal and societal themes, including:

Mental Health: Addressing struggles with inner conflict and the journey toward self-acceptance.

Love and Loss: Reflecting on the complexities of relationships and the emotions tied to love and loss.

Hope and Redemption: Conveying messages of resilience and the pursuit of redemption amidst adversity.

Social Inequality: Highlighting issues of social inequality and advocating for personal empowerment.

By weaving these themes into my music, I aim to create an authentic connection with listeners, fostering understanding and inspiring action.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
Answer:

My music blends alternative, indie folk, and singer-songwriter elements, creating an intimate yet expansive atmosphere that resonates deeply with listeners.  As a self-taught vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, I handle every aspect of my artistry—from composing and recording to production and visual storytelling—ensuring that each piece authentically reflects my vision.  Listeners often describe my songs as raw and emotive, with a haunting quality that lingers long after the music ends. If you're drawn to music that delves into the human experience and evokes deep reflection, I invite you to explore my work.

What is your favorite song you have made, and why?
Answer:

Choosing a favorite song from my repertoire is challenging, as each piece reflects a unique aspect of my journey. However, "So Alone (Live Acoustic)" holds a special place in my heart. This song captures the raw emotions I was experiencing at the time of its creation, making it a deeply personal and authentic expression of my feelings.

What does your dream performance look like?
Answer:

My dream performance would take place in an intimate, acoustically rich venue that fosters a deep connection between the artist and the audience. I envision a setting where the natural resonance enhances the raw, emotive quality of my music, allowing each note and lyric to resonate deeply with listeners.

The stage design would be minimalistic, focusing attention on the music itself, with subtle lighting that complements the mood of each song. This simplicity would create an immersive atmosphere, encouraging the audience to engage fully with the performance.

Sharing personal anecdotes and the stories behind my songs would be integral to the experience, fostering a sense of intimacy and understanding. This approach aligns with my commitment to authenticity and meaningful storytelling in my music.

Ultimately, my dream performance is about creating a shared space where music serves as a conduit for connection, reflection, and emotional resonance.

Who is your dream artist or musician to collaborate with?
Answer:

Collaborating with artists who have deeply influenced my musical journey would be a profound experience. Drawing inspiration from legends like Chris Cornell, and Aaron Lewis, a collaboration with any of them would be a dream come true.

What do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?
Answer:

My aim is for listeners to experience a profound connection with my music, evoking a spectrum of emotions that resonate with their personal experiences. I hope to create a shared space where listeners feel understood and less isolated in their own journeys. Additionally, I aspire for my music to inspire introspection, encouraging individuals to reflect on their own lives and emotions. Ultimately, I want my songs to serve as a source of solace and connection, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding among listeners.

What three words would you want your fanbase to use to describe you?
Answer:

If I were to choose three words for my fan base to describe me, they would be:

Authentic: Reflecting my commitment to genuine storytelling and raw emotional expression in my music.

Introspective: Highlighting the reflective nature of my lyrics, which delve into personal experiences and universal themes.

Resilient: Emphasizing the themes of overcoming adversity and personal growth that permeate my work.
These descriptors encapsulate the essence of my artistry and the messages I aim to convey through my music.

Do you practice? How has your practice changed over time?
Answer:

Consistent practice has been fundamental to my development as a musician. Initially, my practice sessions were informal and unstructured, focusing on exploring different sounds and techniques. Over time, I've adopted a more disciplined approach, setting specific goals for each session to enhance particular skills or work on new material.

I believe that the quality of practice is more important than the quantity. Focused, deliberate practice, even in shorter durations, can lead to significant improvements. This perspective aligns with advice from seasoned musicians who emphasize structured and mindful practice routines.

How do you plan on being a game-changer within your genre?
Answer:

I aim to be a game-changer in the indie folk and alternative music genres through several key approaches:

Authentic Storytelling: By delving deeply into personal experiences and universal themes, I strive to create music that resonates on a profound level, offering listeners genuine and relatable narratives.

Innovative Soundscapes: I continuously experiment with blending traditional acoustic elements with modern production techniques, crafting a distinctive sound that pushes genre boundaries while maintaining emotional depth.

Community Engagement: Through initiatives like the 'Guitars for Kids' program and collaborations with mental health organizations, I use my platform to effect positive change, inspiring others to contribute to their communities.

Visual Storytelling: By integrating compelling visuals with my music, such as in the "Behind the Mask: I'm OK" music video, I aim to enhance the storytelling experience, offering audiences a multi-dimensional understanding of the themes explored.

By intertwining these elements, I endeavor to redefine the listener's experience, making a lasting impact on the indie folk and alternative music landscapes.

If you could alter the music industry in any way, what would you change and why?
Answer:

If I could alter the music industry, I would focus on the following areas to create a more equitable and supportive environment for artists:

Fair Compensation Structures: Adjusting streaming revenue models to ensure artists receive equitable payment for their work. Currently, a vast majority of artists are not financially thriving.

Mental Health Support: Implementing comprehensive mental health programs to address the high rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide among musicians. The music industry has been identified as "profoundly dangerous" due to these alarming statistics.

Intellectual Property Protection: Strengthening measures to safeguard artists' rights and ensure they are appropriately compensated for their creations. The digital age has made it increasingly difficult for musicians to protect their intellectual property, leading to unauthorized use and distribution of their work.

By addressing these issues, the music industry can evolve into a more sustainable and artist-friendly ecosystem, allowing musicians to thrive both creatively and financially.

How would you define having an artistic outlook on life?
Answer:

An artistic outlook on life, to me, means embracing creativity in every aspect of existence. It's about seeing the world through a lens that appreciates beauty, complexity, and emotion, finding inspiration in everyday moments, and expressing oneself authentically through various forms of art. This perspective allows for a deeper connection to both the external world and one's inner self.

Which mediums of art do you most identify with?
Answer:

I identify most with the following artistic mediums:

Music Composition and Performance: Crafting and performing songs allows me to express emotions and narratives that resonate with both myself and my audience.

Lyric Writing: Through songwriting, I delve into storytelling, exploring themes that connect on a personal level.

Visual Storytelling: Creating music videos and visual content enhances the emotional depth of my music, offering a multi-dimensional experience.

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.
Answer:

As Walters Fall, I would be honored to be compared to artists like Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, and Aaron Lewis, whose music has deeply influenced my own artistic journey.

Do you have one main reason driving you to continue making music?
Answer:

My primary motivation for continuing to create music is to inspire and support others through my art. I aim to use my success to help my program, "The Guitars For Kids Program," which provides underprivileged children and those affected by domestic violence with access to music. I believe every child should be blessed with the gift of music

What is your overarching goal as an artist?
Answer:

My overarching goal as an artist is to create raw, emotional indie folk and alternative music that resonates deeply with listeners. I aim to craft haunting melodies and vivid storytelling that invite deep introspection, fostering a profound connection between my music and the audience.
