SoulGod’s Perspective on Scared To Love Me
My name is SoulGod, which is an acronym for "Self Operating Universal Lover with a God Ordained Destiny" I am a rapper producer, songwriter, engineer, and content creator.
I'm a CHH artist born and raised in Hampton Roads, Virginia. I have been pursuing music on and off since 2012, but seriously with CHH since 2018. My music has many different elements from HipHop, Trap, Pop, Godpel, and R&B, influenced by numerous artists in said genres. My motto is, “God, Family, Music” and I live by the three C’s: Creation, Connection, and Contribution; which was introduced to him by the great Myron Golden’s biblical teachings. For a long time, I too was afraid to receive God's love because of feelings of shame and condemnation. Only until I truly found my identity in Christ was I able to accept salvation and receive His love.
My earliest memory of listening to music was riding in the car with my father and the radio played. "Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer! I remember going home and dancing to the video and declaring to myself that one day I would be a rapper as well!
I decided to officially become a rapper when I was in my room with my cousin, and we were listening The Smilez and Southstar album. Their song, "Who Wants This" came on, and it immediately inspired both of us to the point where we never stopped writing rap lyrics from that point on. Fast-forward to 2012 after honing my writing skills for 10 years, I finally had the courage to step out there and record my first mixtape called, "Duality". From then on, I decided that I would pursue a music career as a rapper.
I make Christian hip-hop with fused in elements of R&B and pop music. Growing up in the 2000's in Virginia Beach, we listened to everything. My style is based in trap music, but with lyrical depth and a melodic sound.
The release of “Scared To Love Me” offers a glimpse into the themes explored in ‘POP: Purpose Over Pleasure.’ The album promises to be a powerful collection of songs that explore the intersection of faith, personal growth, and the pursuit of a life filled with purpose.
‘POP: Purpose Over Pleasure’ is an album about choosing faith over fear, love over doubt. It's a journey of self-discovery and a call to embrace the abundant life that God offers.
So I actually have a Mount Rushmore of artists. If I could go on tour with any artist, my options would probably be 1K Phew, Caleb Gordon, Mike Teezy, and Aaron Cole. These are definitely helped me out of my shell, and gave me the inspiration I have today to keep honing my craft and sharing my testimony in a unique way.
Passionate. Fun. Transparent.
My music is mainly a melodic trap sound with elements of R&B and pop sprinkled in here and there. It's a combination of high quality trap beats fused with Christian hip-hop, lyrically in-depth content.
I want people to feel a deep sense of belonging and intimacy with God. When people listen to my music, I want them to not only be able to dance, but also worship. It is my prayer that my testimony sparks a deep connection with the Most High, causing them to seek the Kingdom and His righteousness.
I love making beats, and I love engineering audio. And I also love creating digital content for social media. I truly love these things, and my passion for music has been reinforced by these other gifts through discovery of these gifts from a lack of funding, which drove my own ingenuity in my independent music career.
I've had many jobs over the years! LOL I have been a Grocery Store Bagger and Cashier, Tech Support Representative, Insurance agent, Deep Cleaning Associate, Host and Bus Boy... But my favorite job ever was a Shoe Store Manager!
In the Christian hip-hop space specifically, the artist is an evangelist in my opinion. As CHH artists, we should be seeking to save the lost and edify fellow believers in Christ first and foremost. We should be using our platform and influence for that primary reason, which is why I personally hold myself to a high standard of excellence and authenticity.
If I could change anything in the music industry would definitely be to make the musical journey much more authentic and less copycat. I feel as though the industry is saturated with the lack of originality in all music spaces; especially lyrically.
My scariest experience while pursuing music was when I veered away from God and began to backslide on my faith through my music. I fell on hard times and became desperate which led me to pursuing secular music and jumping back into the underworld of club life in the music industry. I started a multimedia center with someone. It ended badly, to say the least! It was a life-threatening experience that almost killed me literally. It forced me back into the arms of God and I will never turn back.
My main reason and driving force for making music is to spread the word of God. I keep making music like this because God told me to. Until the day I die, I will be obedient to his word that he spoke to me and keep doing everything I can to spread his message through my music. That is my life's ministry.
The greatest and most important lesson I've learned in my music career is to have integrity and authenticity in your own space. Don't let anyone try to put you in a box or convince you that you are less than what you are or even try to limit you in what you can do and accomplish. Always have confidence in yourself to do what you feel in your heart is what you should do. Have unwavering faith and never give up on your dreams.
