I'm Nappy Skilmore. An independent and original Hip Hop artist, writer, lyricist and producer.
Once I learned of my creative and artistic abilities at a very young age, I made it my mission to be as unique, innovative and original as possible. Never one to follow popular trends, I pride myself on my willingness to maintain the integrity of my artistry, regardless of the consequences of being rejected, overlooked, undervalued or unheard.
In the seventh grade, I performed publicly for the first time. Afterwards, a fellow student who had always gave me a hard time, said to me: "Don't ever pick up a microphone again. That was the worse thing I have ever heard. Do not ever do that again!" Right then and there, I resolved that he, or anyone else, would ever say that to me again. And to this day, I've stood on the promise I made myself.

The approach to my artistry is daring and motivated by innovation and thinking outside of the box. In the last three years, I began working on projects as the sole producer, writer and lyricist. It has allowed me to push the envelope of the contemporary methods of the genre I mainly identify with.
Themes explored in my music widely vary, from faith and praise to dealing with and overcoming depression and addiction. I also explore topics such as taking responsibility for one's own life, encouraging others to live life as their authentic self, and using influence to make a positive impact.

I introduce my music to new listeners as art that has something for the hard to reach to relate to and connect with.
My song "Undone" is my favorite because it's an ode to my ex-wife, declaring my love for her and that I will never be done with her, even though she had long ago left me and never looked back. The way it's written, produced and delivered is upbeat, positive, and fun so it sounds like we're still together, giving it a subtle undertone of eerie irony and delusion.

A deep connection and a relatable experience, to feel that someone knows and understands what their life experience has been like. They are offered encouragement and hope to persevere and that will overcome.

A young child who was no older than 8 or 9 years old recognized me one day and excitedly asked for my autograph.
"Get It Together" because the song represents realizing the challenges in one's own life, having the courage to confront them, and celebrating overcoming them.
It is the artist's responsibility to challenge the status quo, endorse and encourage original thought and call fellow citizens to action against systems of oppression and misinformation.
Refusing to conform to the standard that has been imposed upon society that doesn't have its best interest at heart. Standing for what I believe in, remaining true to self and offering music that is sonically enjoyable as it is intellectually provocative.
Traveling and enduring this artistic journey for more than 25 years with very little to no tangible benefit.
