Who are you and what do you do?
Answer:

My name is Matt Gwilt and I am an electronic producer / songwriter from Manchester... I also used to be a member of an indie band called The Sunshine Underground.

How does your background play into this song?
Answer:

My previous band, The Sunshine Underground,  were named after our favourute Chemical Brothers track! In our early days we were inspired by electronic / dance music but we didnt necessarily know how to sonically make that music as we only had guitars... but you can hear the evolution of the music into a more electronic vibe as the albums progressed.

What is your earliest memory of listening to music?
Answer:

My earliest memory of listening to music was as a todler... if I couldn't sleep I would crawll down the stairs and my mum would sit me on her lap with some masssive headphones on and play The Beatles SGT Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band until I fell asleep.

At what moment in your life did you decide to become an artist / performer?
Answer:

From around the age of 13 I pursuaded my friend to buy a cheap bass guitar and I would buy a cheap acoustic guitar and together learned to play the whole Oasis Definately Maybe guitar song book. It would have taken months to eventually get something decipherable and most likely sounded horrendous.

What genres does this release play into?
Answer:

This new song Decorate is hugely Electronic / Pop... I am heavilly influenced by electro pop bangers!

How has your sound and style evolved in the last 3 years?
Answer:

I only started writing again a few years ago after the band split up and it took me a while to find my feet with style, genre and direction. It took a lot of experimentation with new synthesizers and drum machines oh and also my voice, to eventually become comfortable, fluent and decisive to create better material quicker and more effectively.

What themes do you explore throughout your music?
Answer:

I'm only really interested in creating catchy, melodic, hooky, sonically powerful bangers so that is what inspires each new song.

If you could go on tour with any artist, who would it be and why?
Answer:

I'd love to support the Chemical Brothers... they are just the ultimate inspiration and always have been.

How would you describe your favorite artist's music to someone who has never heard them before?
Answer:

I would describe The Chemical Brothers as having the most perfectly produced energetic and thought provoking electronic music ever made.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
Answer:

I would describe my music as sonically, big catchy electronic analogue pop bangers haha!

If you could attend a performance by any artist, dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
Answer:

My number 1 favourite ever band is The Beatles so to have seen them live would be the ultimate life experience... nothing would come close to topping that!

What is your favorite song you have made, and why?
Answer:

My favourite song so far that I have made is a track called 'Are We Dreaming'... It took me a week to write and record it which is one of my fastest yet! It kinda sounds like Klaxons from the 80's

If you could only listen to three artists for the rest of your life, who would you choose and why?
Answer:

The 3 most important bands to me are The Beatles, Radiohead and The chemical brothers.... I think their huge catalogue would keep me going just fine.

What does your dream performance look like?
Answer:

I have played Glastonbury a couple of times with The Sunshine Underground so it would be unbelivable to play there as again under my own name.

Who is your dream artist or musician to collaborate with?
Answer:

I hate to bang on about The Chemical Brothers but a collaboration with them would be the ultimate life achievement.

What is the strangest place where you have discovered a new song?
Answer:

Discovering music sat in a french parisan cafe is always a good place to listen to new music.

What do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?
Answer:

The listener connecting with the lyrics in whatever way they want to would be amazing.... I always write suggestive lyrics rather than life commentary lyrics which to me leaves the listener to use their imagination.

What three words would you want your fanbase to use to describe you?
Answer:

If my fanbase ever wanted to describe me in 3 words... Beautiful, clever and witty!! HAHAHAHA!!

What is your favorite way of sharing your music?
Answer:

Well my new song Decorate is my first ever solo release so I havent really publicly shared my music before but I always let my friends listen to private soundcloud links.

Do you practice? How has your practice changed over time?
Answer:

I dont practice but I am litterally just about to get into the rehearsal room and start practising with a live drummer!

Do you have one main reason driving you to continue making music?
Answer:

Creating music is what drives me... whether im selling it and trying to make a living from it or whether its just for a hobbie... If i didnt create then there would be an empty void in my life.

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.
Answer:

Depeche Mode are a great inspiration for me,  also Jagwarma I get referenced to quite a lot and finally I wouldn't at all mind being compared to LCD Soundsystem.
