JohnThorin Perspective on One Kiss - (Alt.Mix)

We Dont Want Your War, written in Feb 2023 following the attack on Ukraine. I wanted to write a song that reflected how I felt the day I heard the news - sad, apprehensive, resistant, forlorn. I used a sample from the public domain, Moonligyt sonata, whih I felt captured the bruality of a war that fell like ashes on a bewildered world consciousness.

It makes you hot and cold all over. Can make you laugh and cry at the same time. Can lift you up or cast you down.
Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley

Stevie Wonder. His body of work is amazing.
Nirvana, totally rocking.
Marvin Gaye, that voice deserves an audience.

It's melodic pop with sounds that can elevate your mood or help you decompress after a long stressful day.

Seal? We have similar voices.
Fat Freddy Drops, cuz the band has some mighty grooves.
Stephen Marley cause he has found his father's voice and Prince because why wouldn't I?

Love and relationsips, war and peace, religion and philosophy, pain and suffering.

It's maturing. Sounds, textures, feel - I feel they are all getting better. Also I like to think the sound is getting sharper and cleaner as i learn my craft. Dont forget, I'm relatively new to this writing, mixing malarkey. Singing I've always done. But the mixing and producing is new.

Pop and Rock! Prince in his early days, between PR and SOTT albums maybe. Maybe Alt Rock too.

Still haven't decided that. But during lockdown I made the decision to get some of my tracks out there while I had time to write and produce. So that's what I did. I still work a 9-5. But music is my passion.

Must have been four. Cant have been much older. My dad wad playing something on the radio, James Brown How Do You Stop. I couldn't stop listening to that song. It was mesmerising, compelling. It started me down the path of melodic grooves, a path I'm still on.

I grew up in the streets of Kingstonn, Jamaica where reggae and dancehall was played on every street corner and every bar. On the radio however they played other songs, funner songs, like Stevie Wonder, The Bangles, Patti Labelle, Billy Joel and so on. This sort of influenced my choice of music. Reggae is my heartbeat but fun grooves informs my aesthetic.

My name is JohnThorin, not my real name. I guess you could call me a part time singer/songwriter writing with dreams of my music making a difference to someone on the world stage at some point in their life. I'm a desgner by day and moonlight as a producer/performer by night.

Marvin Gaye - he could deliver a line like no other.
Stevie Wonder - a musical trip every listen.
Prince - always a gem to be pondered over

An intimate club, a tight set with amazing musicians and backing and a set of fans who know my music.

The joy when you release new material and you're happy with what you've done, regardless of sales or feedback

I dont.

Sing about the world around you about what moves and inspires you. If its relationships, write love songs. If its society, write social commmentary, if its politics write protest songs. Whatever floats your boat. YYour songs should reflect the world around you.

Bob Marley, Redemption Song.
Might not be his biggest seller. But there isn't a fan who isn't moved by the acoustic version of that song, both in its timing and content.

Haven't had one yet

Artists still need nurturing and development. I would go back to the days of Motown Records when singers where groomed and tailored. It takes young artists a while to find out what they stand for and find their voice. Today's labels need to recognise that and help where they can.
