Don't Tell Kate Perspective on Unhinged

Each band member would say something different, and that seems to be the case from our fan base as well. My personal favorite is Gatekeeper because it has so many nuanced instrumental and textural layers to it that are simple but add a strong foundation that supports a more complex melody. It's a whole unique mood. It's easy to get lost in the psychadelic lullaby and then shocked and shaken with the build of energy into the bridge that's punctuated with a kick ass guitar solo. The whole thing is a trip.

My brothers and I were gifted a Fisher Price record player to share when we were little. It came with some kind of starter kit kid vinyl. I loved taking the records out of the sleeves and dropping the needle and hearing the music come out. When I was 3 I received a Captain Zoom customized Happy Birthday record and was blown away hearing my name in a song.

Seen, heard, understood, connected, and all the deep emotions that come with that recognition. When I write I try to reach into the depths of empathy for the story I see in my head and pull out the raw emotions that we all feel but sometimes don't have the words for. If I can create a story that encapsulates what people feel in their most vulnerable state, whether it's nostalic, lonely, smitten, lost, etc., as a listener there's nothing like feeling like someone somewhere understands you at your core, and as a writer/performer there's nothing like the feeling of channeling that voice for others.

I wrote and roughly composed a song a week for 50 weeks as part of a songwriting group FiftySongs. One of the weekly prompts was "hidden pictures". It made me think of a locket and how a locket is like wearing a secret. At the time I had a friend who was in a complicated relationship of waiting and empty promises so I created a fictional character inspired by her story of longing and heartache, and ultimately the liberation of breaking free from it.
