What inspired this song?

Answer:

This song is about a couple that can't overcome tragedy. Their child's death in the first verse leads to the wife's suicide attempt in the second verse. As much as they leave each other, the couple's relationship is strained to a point of breaking, so the chorus reminisces about when things were simple.
