How does your background play into this song?

Answer:

Spectacle, broadly, is about the self-aggrandizing culture we live in. It's also about the years I spent deeply unhappy because I viewed myself through the lens of social media. I was caught in a constant state of comparison and self-pity. And social media is really good at making us all feel small while bringing us in for more, perpetuating the cycle.
