For singer-songwriter Roan Yellowthorn (Jackie Lee McLean), her sophomore studio album is a rather personal one. The music came together during the summer of 2019, when McLean decided to put herself in a sensory deprivation situation.
Although the songwriting was done in isolation, the music production was a collaborative effort. With producer John Agnello (
Kurt Vile,
Alvvays,
Dinosaur Jr.), Agnello, McLean and bandmate Shawn Strack, together, created an album of indie rock daydreams filled with dark confessions, self-awareness, and a tinge of fantasy that dares to imagine what it might be like to live “another life.” The album follows a largely DIY effort by the duo who released an EP of covers earlier this year, Rediscovered, along with their inaugural studio album Indigo back in 2018. These efforts led to appearances on Adam Duritz’s (
Counting Crows) Underwater Sunshine as well as a SXSW 2022 showcase.
