Mike & the Melvins represents a long-simmering collaboration between two acts known for their devotion to all things heavy. In 1999, minimalist heavy rock duo
Godheadsilo broke up, and the group's bassist and lead singer Mike Kunka pondered his next move. Kunka joined his like-minded friends
the Melvins on a tour, and he and the band began swapping ideas for songs. Before the tour was over, Kunka and
the Melvins were discussing the idea of making a record together, and
Sub Pop,
Godheadsilo's label, agreed to bankroll the sessions. Before the year was out, Kunka and the 1999
Melvins -- Buzz Osborne,
Dale Crover, and Kevin Rutmanis -- had entered the studio with engineer Tim Green to knock out the album. However, for reasons that appear unclear to all parties involved, the album wasn't completed at the time. In 2015, Kunka approached
the Melvins about finishing the long lost collaboration, and engineer Toshi Kasai helped with final overdubs and mixing. Credited to Mike & the Melvins, the album, titled Three Men and a Baby, finally greeted the public in April 2016. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
