Macula Dog are an unabashedly strange, arty group from Queens, New York City who make mutated experimental pop which instantly brings to mind
the Residents and
Devo. The group refer to themselves as a "four-person electronic duo," as members Mark Brothers (Mark Matthews) and Bruce Brothers (Ben Mendelewicz) perform with mannequins (Matt Brothers and Ben Brothers) strapped to their backs. Their recordings, including 2016's Why Do You Look Like Your Dog?, typically feature warped MIDI instrumentation, scrambled vocals, and obtuse arrangements, and they sound just as colorful and messy as their performances and videos.
Both members originate from Florida, and had released solo projects on their New York-based tape label
Haord Records, but they started performing together as Macula Dog in early 2014. They began playing out at underground venues throughout the city and eventually the east coast, and found a natural home appearing on public access television and contributing music to Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. A self-titled cassette appeared on
Haord in 2015, and full-length Why Do You Look Like Your Dog? was released by
Wharf Cat in 2016. Another
Haord cassette, Natural Dog, came out in 2017. After a short break, the band returned in 2020, reissuing their self-titled cassette on vinyl, and releasing a four-song EP, Breezy. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
